Halloween 2011

Halloween has become a big holiday hasn’t it?  When I was growing up, Halloween was a one day event that was observed on October 31st.  Now days Halloween activities take place on several days leading up to the 31st.

Our fun began on Thursday  with our local black cat hunt.  It’s an event that our radio station has hosted since 1948.  Six cats are hidden around town and clues are given as to where to find the kitty.  Each cat has it’s own prize package with the prizes getting larger with each cat.  We’ve been going on these hunts for years and never found one until this year!  This year we found cat number two, which had a prize package valued at nearly $400.  The cats were actually purple this year since the sponsors couldn’t find any black ones!

On Friday,  there was downtown trick or treating with local businesses passing out candy.  It was amazing how many children turned out this year!

After the downtown event, we had a party at John Charles’ karate studio.  It was a lot of fun with food, games, a costume contest, pumpkin carving contest, and trunk or treating with a decorating contest.

We didn’t have any more activities until Monday with the normal neighborhood trick or treating.  Our neighborhood is a mad house each Halloween with families from all over town coming to trick or treat and even children being bussed over.  This year an amazing number of houses were dark as we walked around the neighborhood.  I don’t know if a lot of people didn’t participate or if they ran out of candy quickly this year.  Candy was expensive this year and I guess it just didn’t go as far!  John Charles still got more than he needs though and I’m sure most other children did too.
