We had a bit of leisure time this afternoon and decided to use it to go letterboxing. I first heard of letterboxing from Tammy’s blog and we have been wanting to try it. We printed 3 clues from the internet and headed out. We had a lot of fun, but next time we will not go in the heat of the day!
Clue #1
To find Box #10 – Find the location in the photo. It is in Griffin, GA. Stonewall Cemetery is located on part of a plot given as a burial site by General Lewis Lawrence Griffin, when he founded Griffin in 1840. Several hundred Confederates and one Union soldier, casualties of the Battle of Atlanta and Jonesboro, from the hospital at old Synodical College and the battlefields, are buried here.
1. This isn't a big cemetery, so, do walk through and pay your respects.
2. Check out the monument in the center of the cemetery.
3. Go to the southern corner of the monument and site 180* to a huge tree (toward the highway side of the cemetery)
4. Now that you know where the box is - your curiosity is satisfied and you can go. Don't just walk....run - run like a Confederate Cannon is being loaded under your boots.
5. If you decide to go forward - just know - you were warned. Nestled so tightly in the bottom of this tree is this box.
6. Stamp up and may you not be permanently scarred by the experience.
Be sure to go with a friend. You'll need the moral support after you see this unbelievably bad stamp. There are support groups in your area.

This should have been the easiest box to find today, but we never did. I don’t think it is there any more!
Clue #2
Dundee Lake
Clues:
Facing the lake, head left. Follow the path down and around behind the dam. When you get to a concrete and wooden walk bridge, Stop. Take two steps backwards. There is a tree holding up a big rock on your left. Just to the left of this tree is a trail leading down into a pit. Walk ten paces and search the rock ledge. Beware the trailing ivy, literally.
Hike Length: 0.5 miles
We found the second box easily!
Clue #3
Dumdee Lake
Clues:
Facing the lake, head right. Walk the treeline around the lake until you get to a fork-trunked pine tree. Stand with this pine in front of you and the tire behind you. Sight 90º to a trail on your right where some rocks are holding up a tree. Go to the trail-head and find the crooked old man. Check out his fall colour.
We found this box easily once we found the hidden trail.

Oooooh! This is so fun! We have 18 stamps in our book now, lol! It's so much fun.
ReplyDeleteBe on the look out for "travelers." They are letterbox sets that are extra in some letterboxes you find. You get to stamp those books too, and add their stamp to your book, and then you get to take the traveler to the next letterbox you find.
ALSO, there are hitchhikers. Those are letterboxes like the travelers except that they are trying to get to a particular destination. For instance, one lady moved from Washington to Rhode Island and she began her hitchhiker along its way at the first letterbox she stopped at during her drive across the country. In only a month it had made it clear to Idaho Falls, and we were able to send it east just a bit too. We've found a couple of hitchhikers as well as travelers.
What stamp did you guys make for your family? We made a very simple mushroom because we love fairies so much.
Forgot to say, we've gone looking for some letterboxes that are no longer there, too. I think maybe some people throw them away thinking they are trash, and maybe sometimes they just get "lost" from natural elements or even animals. Still...it's always fun to look for them even if they aren't there. The clues always take us to such pretty or unusual places. :)
ReplyDelete18 stamps, that's great. Some how we overlooked the fact that we were suppose to stamp the book too. We were thinking that we just signed the book we found and stamped our own. So that's what we did today. We still need to make our own stamp. I'm thinking a sunshine!
ReplyDeleteWe've seen signatures without stamps too. In fact, quite often.
ReplyDeleteOurs we just carved into a pink rectangular eraser, lol!
Ok, now I'm intrigued. Talk about living on an island and not knowing what is going on.
